Ayurveda for the Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease with Dr. Gerard Buffo

Heart disease and cancer are the most common causes of death in the U.S. Despite this, the Interheart study suggests that 90% of heart disease is reversible or preventable and more than two-thirds of cancer deaths are preventable.

What are the elements that lead to these modern killers and how can they be prevented? The answer is to that question is complicated, and depends on many factors. However, when exploring the issue through the lens of Ayurveda, certain details emerge. Reports place the blame on many chemical agents as causes of these diseases. For decades, the government has waged a war on heart disease and cancer. But the reported causes remain mixed and the diseases aren’t eradicated.

Smoking, poor food choices, exposure to toxins and lack of exercise contribute to disease. From an Ayurvedic perspective, these factors create the foundation for poor health, but can be successfully modified. In addition, we are learning more about the role of chronic inflammation in cancer and heart disease. We are also beginning to understand differences between these diseases by gender, the role of stress and how flexibility may alter outcomes.

Ayurveda has long known how to combat factors that contribute to development of heart disease and cancer through lifestyle and diet changes, in addition to natural herbal treatments. In examining nature, and our place therein, we can overcome these diseases.
