Chalk Walk Returns to Collinsville This Weekend

It was one of those legendary, if brief, Collinsville events.

For a couple years in the mid 2000s, as part of an event called Artoberfest, Main Street became a canvas for artists who competed for prizes and children of all ages who just love to draw. It was Collinsville's own chalk walk, frozen in time at LaSalle Market where for years an image of artists, cyclists and onlookers at the chalk walk has hung on the wall.

Local artist Kate McAllister is looking to revive the spirit of those events and for Saturday, Sept. 28 has scheduled a Chalk Walk, Septemberfest and Art Market in Collinsville.

"We haven't done something like that, during the day, in a long time," she said.

The event is set for 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will include live music, an art market, sponsored chalk artists who will compete for prizes and an area where children can draw. Many businesses will be hosting special events as well.

McAllister said she plans to have fun with how it's all laid out and may intersperse elements.

"It will be a big party and it will be fun," she said.

It also promises to be a fun autumn in Collinsville. The Collinsville Arts Initiative is planning the 20th Annual Halloween parade for Saturday, Oct. 26 and McAllister is helping to plan a Ghoulish Gallery of Goods and Pumpkin Extravaganza that same day.

"The (chalk walk) will segue into the Halloween parade nicely," McAllister said

There are still some open slots for artists who would like to compete in the event this weekend.
