About Sylvia
There were two things I always wanted to be when I grew up: One was a writer, the other a firefighter. Mrs Geisler in 2nd grade encouraged me to pursue the former. The events of 9-11-01 propelled me into the latter.
I spent my early marketing-communication-public relations careers working in banking and insurance during what were very tumultuous, but exciting times of evolution for these industries. I could regularly be found working on products, events and projects designed to innovate, challenge and advocate for the customers and markets we served.
I left the corporate environment to consult for the state of Connecticut's Department of Economic & Community Development as a marketing executive. This began my transition to working more directly with the community. In 1999, I started Red Barn Communication, LLC; a marketing consulting company focusing on the arts, small businesses and organizations that advocate and promote the health and education of women and children.
So, today I find myself at Canton-ct.Patch.com writing the About Town column for Canton, bringing all of these experiences into one place. And I continue to serve as a volunteer firefighter as well as Public Relations Officer for the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department. Living the dream.
