Pair hopes to help with projects, teaching techniques.
During a 2009 trip to Ghana, Rachel Perry was struck by the simple, yet content lifestyles. “It’s so hard to describe. Life is so simple,” she said. “They have nothing but they’re genuinely happy. You forget all the petty worries we have here. They’re so appreciative.” At the same time, however, it is a poor country and many believe in lending a hand to help its residents, especially children, have a clean place to sleep and a good education. This week Perry, a teacher’s aide at Stepping Stones Educational Center and co-worker Jessie DeMarco, a 2006 Canton High School graduate, are going to a different part of the country. The two will spend more than a month at Happy Kids Orphanage, a project in Wegbe, Ghana, that helps provides schools …

By the 2012 Project Graduation Committee
For the past 20 years, Canton parents and volunteers have provided Canton High School graduating seniors with an all night substance-free party on the evening of graduation. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, June 15, 2012. The goal of the evening is to provide the students with a fun-filled night of entertainment and food, while keeping them together and safe. We have experienced nearly 100-percent attendance year after year, a clear sign that our efforts are appreciated. This event is always one of the students’ fondest high school memories. Part of the reason for the high attendance is that there is no cost for the graduating senior to attend. It is through the repeated generosity of local business owners and residents that we …

Grants to school district provided each year.
For Canton Mobil owner Joe Eisenberg, a chance to present the Canton schools with a donation each year is a highlight. “It’s just about giving back to the community,” Eisenberg said. “It’s one of the very few positives in a volatile industry.” The funds come from the Exxon-Mobil Education Alliance, which has granted the Canton School District funding for approximately 8 years now. For 2012-2013 school year, the alliance allotted $500. Let Patch save you time. Get great local stories like this delivered right to your inbox or smartphone every day with our free newsletter. Move will bring 20 more Canton students into program.
The Canton Board of Education has approved a third extended-day kindergarten session for the 2012-2013 school year. The board voted unanimously Tuesday night to follow the recommendation of Superintendent Kevin D. Case and add a third session. Earlier in the year, the board voted to continue with two sessions next year. Case, however, said that lower numbers in first-grade enrollment would warrant one less section there, allowing the extra kindergarten session. “Because of the large demand and because we do have space available, I am recommending one additional session,” Case said. In all, the district received applications from 62 families for the program. With 12 Project Choice Students from Hartford expected in kindergarten next year, …
