Local Vet Hopes to Open Emergency Center by Fall

Zoning Commission approves plans for former KinderCare building.

A local veterinary doctor said she hopes to open a "Vet Emergency Center" on Dowd Avenue by the fall.  Dr. Shannon Bertolino of Canton, along with her husband Vincent, were granted special exception from the Canton Zoning Commission Wednesday night to open the facility at 135 Dowd Ave. at the former child-care center, most recently operated as KinderCare.  The Bertolinos said the facility would be a no appointment necessary center for sudden trauma. Care would be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week but primarily be utilized evenings and weekends, when normal vet offices are closed.  Shannon Bertolino told the commission that the facility will not board pets, house any permanently or perform routine care. Most pets taken in would …

Emergency Veterinary Hospital Proposed at Former KinderCare Site

Public hearing slated for Wednesday, May 16.

This week, the Canton Zoning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on a proposed emergency veterinary hospital at the former KinderCare child-care center on Dowd Ave.  Shannon and Vincent Bertolino are applying to put the facility, for pet treatment in "situations of sudden illness and trauma," at 135 Dowd Ave., at the corner of Canton Springs Road, according to town records. Under current zoning, the business needs a special exception. As part of that, the commission will consider the circumstances of the proposed use, its consistency with the character of the neighborhood, parking, access and more. Prior to approval, the property owner should remedy some situations that do not meet prior site-plan approval, such as grading of …

Hey we have a medical facility on every corner. Why not one for animals too. After all, pretty soon we'll have mandated health care insurance for pets.   more ›

Fireplace Building Changes Hands

Restoration, name to honor history of building, long-time owner.

The former Fireplace Café was officially sold Wednesday morning and while the building will be completely renovated, much of its history will live on, one of the new owners said. Wednesday morning, 3 River Street, LLC, consisting of Gregory Boyko, manager, and Kevin Witkos, member, purchased the building for $119,000 Wednesday, with the plan of keeping a restaurant and bar on the lower level and four efficiency apartments on the upper level. The restaurant will be known as Wilson’s in honor of the late William H. Wilson Jr., Boyko said. In addition, the totem in front of the building is being restored and will be displayed on the side of the building in what will likely be a porch area, Boyko said. “We felt we should honor Mr. Wilson,” …

Students Offer Design Ideas for Canton

Canton Center, Route 44 the focus of student project.

Students from the University of Connecticut recently shared several planning ideas for Canton Center and Route 44 with residents. That presentation is now available here.  The presentation was a follow–up to a charrette workshop facilitated by students from a University of Connecticut Landscape Architecture studio course in community planning. While some businesses men felt the original workshop underrepresented large-scale development options, Paula Stahl, a UConn Extension Educator, reminded people at the follow-up meeting that the town not obligated to follow through with the ideas. However, she urged people to keep an open mind, said the students had visited town several time and said people looking at a town with fresh eyes often …

Dentfix Owner: Improvements On Track For Memorial Day

Retail location likely to open this month.

The Dentfix Express building at 16 Maple Ave. has been the site of much activity over the past few weeks. Owner Steve Roberto has hired roofing, paving and additional contractors as he prepares to open the retail location. During the process, he has discovered some surprises such as molding that had been hidden under a secondary roof on the building. On Monday, workers from Franklin Painting were busy caulking, restoring and painting the molding.  As he returns it to more of its historical look, Roberto said he would love some old photographs of the building if anyone has any. While he has seen some that show the business from a distance or the rear, he hopes to find a close-up of the front of the building. Contact him at 860-693-3368 or …

Demographic Absent From Charrette Workshop

By Christopher McCahill

Late last month, students and faculty from UConn led a well-attended charrette workshop in Canton. The event gave residents an opportunity to voice their opinions on what future development in town ought to look like.  Some themes that kept coming up were historic preservation, land conservation, commercial development, and walkability. But an entire demographic was noticeably absent — young adults in their 20s and early 30s. In fact, I was probably one of two people there who fit well within this category. I blame it partly on apathy and disinterest among my peers. But it also has a lot to do with the fact that many no longer live in the area. Canton graduates that I've kept in contact with have moved to places like New York, Philadelphia…

Residents Offer Input on Route 44, Canton Center

UConn students listen to their ideas for class project.

Residents offered planning input for Route 44 and Canton Center in a charrette workshop Monday evening. Students from a University of Connecticut Landscape Architecture studio course in community planning and Paula Stahl, a UConn Extension Educator, facilitated the event. The workshop included input from residents on their favorite places to visit, frequency of Route 44 use, the features of Canton Center and what they would miss if they came back in 15 years and it were gone. A few common themes emerged from the exercise such as a love of walkable communities and that most residents drive on Route 44 at least once a day. Stahl said that while Route 44 is a busy road, parallel walking areas are a strong possibility. Residents also met with …

Several Collinsville Residents Express Concerns After Balloon Test

Company interested in possibly putting cell tower at Collinsville fire station.

Several Collinsville residents, most from Dyer Avenue, expressed concerns to the Board of Selectmen Wednesday night after the town conducted a balloon test to help assess the impact a cell tower would have at the Collinsville Fire Station. Several of the residents said they were neutral or mildly favorable to the idea until they saw the 150-foot balloon. Others said the negative impact to the river area and other parts of Collinsville would be significant "My thoughts about having a cell phone tower there I have to say were rather ambivalent this morning when I woke up but when I looked at my back porch about 9:10 I was shocked," said Dyer Avenue resident David Sinish. Christopher M Grinnell, also of Dyer Avenue, said the neighborhood has …

Residents Urged to Attend Session on Future Planning for Route 44, Canton Center

Student-run charrette scheduled for March 26.

Later this month, residents, developers and land-use commissioners are invited to gather and offer input on future planning for Route 44 as well as Canton Center village. Monday, March 26 the University of Connecticut Landscape Architecture Studio will host a Charrette. The charrette is a kind of intensive planning workshop designed to set forth a collaborative effort for future development and other planning. The process is often designed to bring competing interests together and find solutions. The charrette will kick off a project by a University of Connecticut Landscape Architecture studio course in community planning, according to a town press release. After the initial charrette, the students will come back to town on April 25 with …

A charrette would be the single most business-friendly move this town could make. Unfortunately, the town has resisted adopting this approach and instead has relied upon its piecemeal approach of countless committees and hoops to jump through. Let's hope this student initiative gets the attention of the town leadership.   more ›
