Excellent turn out for the parade from the town and surrounding fire departments, the parade is a tradition that many towns are letting go of and forgetting about. Hope to see an even bigger turn out at the parade next year.   more ›

Witkos to Spend Last Day at Canton Police Department Today

Sergeant started with Department in 1989.

It will be an emotional day for Sgt. Kevin Witkos as he spends his last day at the Canton Police Department today. Witkos has worked for the department since Nov. 6, 1989. “It’s certainly been a rewarding career,” Witkos said. “You never know what your day’s going to be like.” Witkos has seen a lot over the years. One highlight was when he and the late William J. LaDuke Jr. used a newly acquired automated external defibrillator and saved a life at 21 Dowd Ave. “I’ll always remember that,” he said. Witkos said another highlight was the department’s solving of a “smash and grab” at the Citgo gas station a few years ago. The suspect, who didn’t get any money because police were on scene so quickly, ran into the woods and managed to disappear …

I would like to send my sincere Thanks to Kevin Witkos. He truly is "Canton's Finest". I am so thankful that my Father who passed away five years ago got the opportunity to meet Kevin. Kevin was sent to check on my father several times as his health failed him towards the end. Kevin actually saved his life by providing the care that only he knew how to do. Through their relationship, I got to …   more ›

Three Connecticut Women Charged in Elaborate Pyramid Scheme

The U.S. Attorney's Office describes the alleged use of 'Gifting Tables.'

Three Connecticut women have been charged with operating what the U.S. Attorney's office says is a pyramid scheme known as "Gifting Tables." Donna Bello, 55, of Guilford, Jill Platt, 64 of Guildford, and Bettejane Hopkins, 66, of Essex, were arrested on Wednesday after an 18-count federal indictment charged them with conspiracy, and tax and wire fraud. “The indictment alleges that the three defendants ran a pyramid scheme designed to enrich themselves at the expense of other participants,” said U.S. Attorney David B. Large Pay Raises for State Police Brass

Nearly half a million more dollars are going to the captains and lieutenants in the Connecticut State Police department this fiscal year.

Higher-ups in the State Police Department are slated to get pay raises of up to 56 percent. According to the Associated Press, the deal passed automatically because the state legislature chose not to vote on the contract within 30 days of its filing. It will be the first raise for the group since 2008.     In 2011, 56 state troopers were laid off in order to reduce costs. All were officers who recently graduated from the academy.      The raises will reportedly set the state back $458,000 in the current fiscal year.
