College graduates now owe more than $1 trillion for their education — debt that some experts say is crippling the economy. What do you think? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.
College loans have topped $1 trillion, and defaults are on the rise. "Outstanding student loans topped $1 trillion last year, exceeding the total amount of credit card debt. Thousands of borrowers are postponing getting married, buying a home or having children until their debts are paid off. Defaults are rising, which typically leads to larger loan balances. And the problem isn't limited to young adults. Some borrowers are older adults who went back to school. Others are parents who co-signed loans for their children," USA Today reports. What do you think? Does the way we pay for higher education in this country need to be overhauled? Are you buried under a mountain of student debt? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.
“The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy."
Göring: “Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.” Military psychologist Gustave Gilbert: “There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the …

Celebrity Apprentice, 9 p.m., NBC And the winner is … In a million years I would not have pegged Arsenio and Clay Aiken to be the finalists. Right? Or certainly that snot Aubrey to have come in third. Which is why we love the Apprentice! I am picking Clay to win. For no particular reason, other than I still feel bad I voted for Ruben in the Idol finale. The 2012 Billboard Music Awards, 8 p.m., ABC “Festivities at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas recognize artists for the fan support they've garnered; musical performances include Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, LMFAO and the Wanted; musician Stevie Wonder receives the 2012 Billboard Icon Award.” Nurse Jackie, 9 p.m., Showtime The best evolution in this new season is not the trials and …

Some ideas to motivate your child to finish the school year strong, even though beautiful weather and other distractions are great temptations.
I will let you in on a little secret: checking PowerSchool five times a day does not make the numbers go up any more than getting on the scale every hour will make the numbers go down. To lose weight you just have to motivate yourself. To improve grades you have to motivate your kids, which is infinitely more difficult. I will trade places with Bob Harper any day of the week. I spent this past week trying to light fires under my students, who seem to think the school year will wait until they finish all their assignments and research papers, while simultaneously talking parents off the ledge. This happens every year at about this time. It’s the pre-finals slump; right after research papers are due and before hardcore studying for finals …

Harry’s Law, 8 p.m., NBC Cancelled. The Firm, 9 p.m., NBC Cancelled. Meet Mrs. Eastwood & Company, 10 p.m., E! I imagine being married to Clint Eastwood is a lot like being forced to watch Unforgiven over and over in a small, airless room. So perhaps having her own reality show is just something to do to pass the time, but perhaps it is a cry for help (like Gary Busey’s wife on Wife Swap). So I plan to watch closely, for clues. “Clint Eastwood's wife, Dina, introduces their daughters and their housekeeper, then Dina reveals her passion project.”

A new study says it may extend your life, but others have shown it could cause harm.
Like many things we ingest, coffee is alternately touted as a vice and an elixir of health. A large study released this week saw the pendulum swing to the health side. According to health.com, the study from the National Institutes of Health "followed more than 400,000 healthy men and women between the ages of 50 and 71 for up to 13 years, during which 13% of the participants died." During the study, coffee drinkers were less likely to die, and "the more coffee they drank, the lower their mortality risk tended to be. Compared with people who drank no coffee at all, men and women who drank six or more cups per day were 10% and 15% less likely, respectively, to die during the study." Do you believe that coffee may actually extend your life? …
A lacrosse tournament offers up a lesson in restraint.
OK, I agree that stiffer competition can make a team better in the long run. I get that. It’s why the younger brothers and sisters of siblings involved in sports often show advanced skills early on. So there we were on a Saturday afternoon at a lacrosse tournament with teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. I got the feeling that the team from Long Island wasn’t making the trip to lose to a team made up of mostly football players and former baseball players (as one mom perfectly stated). I’ll make a crazy assumption that the team from LI spends the entire calendar year playing together as a unit. They could have been blindfolded and still have known where their teammates were. It was fun to watch — at first. With each game …

A State school at $20K or $80k over 4 years requires a debt service simple of 8K/yr or 16K in compensation to net out 8K. In this scenario is makes some more sense to be a school teacher, and BONUS for a more lucrative employment pursuit. The bottom line is education is horribly overpriced. The cost grows at a rate that is a multiple of inflation, and there are schools, parents, etc., saying you …   more ›
