Canton Senior & Social Services Thanks Volunteers

Submitted release

On Monday, April 8, 2013 Canton Senior & Social Services department hosted a "Volunteers & Friends" Appreciation Luncheon at the Canton Community Center.

This annual event provides opportunity for staff of the department to thank all of the folks who provide time, energy, compassion and assistance through the department to help Canton residents of all ages.

The group consisted of a total of 80 attendees but over 100 volunteers were invited to the event, according to Director of Senior & Social Services, Claire Cote.
"Senior & Social Services would not, could not, run without people like you chipping in to help out where and when needed" Cote exclaimed in her opening remarks.

The event was "Candy Land" themed, and those in attendance were invited to snack on the goodies that adorned the tables (also identified by name: "Cupcake Commons," "Ice Cream Sea," "Gingerbread House," "Chocolate Land," "Licorice Lagoon." Sponsorship for some goodies was provided by Cake Gypsy of Canton, and Munson's Chocolates as well.

The menu was provided by Cherry Brook Healthcare Center and Ben & Jerry's scooped for the volunteers to round out the meal.

There was a raffle prize giveaway as well, as volunteers guessed how many Jelly Beans were in a jar, and entertainment was provided by the talented Canton High School Jazz Combo. Canton Senior & Social Services is dedicated to working hard to ensure the health, wellness and well-being of all the residents of the town of Canton.

The office oversees all programming within and associated with the Senior Center, while administering all federal and state programs and assisting in the application and follow-up process for all resources made available to clients. Volunteers assist with meal preparation for congregate meals, food delivery through meals on wheels, medical transportation services; they run programs at the Senior Center, and belong to groups that assist residents of all ages in need.

The number of attendees this year increased over past years as the needs of the department have changed, explained Cote, as she illustrated her appreciation and the need for volunteers who are willing to help, "With the changes in our population and the challenges facing our residents, Senior & Social Services is here to provide support, resources and space for the people of this sweet community."

Senior & Social Services wants to thank the Canton Community for it's support over the past years, including those who were in attendance for the luncheon and those who were unable to come or who were not recognized.

Cote asserted that she sees her department as a "hub" of wellness and all those folks who assist the department, support the Canton community as a whole: "I’m proud to be part of the Canton team, a town that recognizes the wisdom, the laughter and the support that everyone provides, regardless of their circumstances . . . what a "Sweet Treat" to Canton all these Volunteers are."
