Canton High School Wall of Fame Nominations Being Accepted

School district looks to revive tradition, continue to honor alumni who've made a difference.

In the early 2000s, Dr. Jordan Grossman, then assistant principal at Canton High School, wanted to start an event to correspond with alumni weekend.

There was no football team at that time so the traditional "homecoming" activities were out. Instead, Grossman worked with the student council to start a Wall of Fame, an effort to honor community members who would make great role models. The first members were inducted in 2002.

Generally the Wall of Fame ceremony involves an induction dinner, entertainment by students and other festivities. A plaque for each inductee remains at the actual wall right inside the entrance to Canton High School.

Though athletics are generally part of the weekend, the Wall of Fame honors graduates who contribute and give back to society, Grossman said. His hope was that the students and administrators would connect with graduates, many of whom are making a difference right in town.

It did that and more, Grossman said.

"It was just great seeing all these generations come back to the school," Grossman said. "The whole purpose was for our students to be able to use these alumni for role models."

The effort began in 2002 and lapsed last year but this year there will be an Oct. 12 banquet at Canton High School. Nominations for the wall are being accepted through the end of June.

Nominees must:

  • Be a Canton High School graduate who earned a diploma before 2001.
  • Have made significant contributions to the community (Canton or current community) and/or their chosen field of work.
  • Remain a citizen in good standing.

The nomination form can be found here. See a list of previous inductees here
