Graziano and Franklin Lift Canton to Top 20 Finish in State Open

Canton High School senior Matt Graziano took home his second State Open title in discus Monday, after earning his second Class S championship a week before, according to the Collinsville Press.

The win is unprecedented. Graziano is the first Canton High School athlete to win two straight State Open titles and one of only five to win just one, the Press said.

The title caps a winning season for Graziano during which he has repeatedly thrown the discus beyond the competition area’s boundaries, the Press reported.

Several other Canton athletes also turned in stellar performances at Monday’s State Open at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

Julian Franklin, a senior, equaled Graziano’s 14 points, coming in fifth in the triple jump and setting a school record of 44 feet. Finishing 12th in the long jump, Franklin missed making the finals by just 2 inches.

Both Graziano and Franklin qualified to go on to the New England championship meet Saturday in New Britain.

Canton’s Colin Martin, Keith Goeben, Jimmy Spatcher, Keith Wilson finished 15th in the men’s 4x400. Its 4x800 relay team, made up of Spatcher, James Yost, Athen Chekas and Matt DeMarco, finished 17th.

Keith Wilson also finished 14th in the 400 meters while James Yost finished 19th in the 3,200 meters.

The team overall finished 16th at the Open. Complete results from the meet are here.
