The 31st Annual Wide Open Golf Classic

The Annual WIDE OPEN GOLF CLASSIC will hold its 31st Golf Tournament on Friday, October 5th at Blue Fox Run Golf Club in Avon.  Dr. Matthew Keefe of Canton Valley Dental along with David Regan of Canton and Ryan Mains of West Hartford will organize the tournament once again.  The WIDE OPEN is a non-profit charitable event that was created to benefit the local communities’ substance abuse programs, which gives children the skills needed to avoid involvement with drugs and alcohol.  Donations will once again be sent from the proceeds of the WIDE OPEN Golf Tournament to the local high schools (Canton, Avon and Northwestern Regional 7), as well as, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center – Oncology Department.  Thanks to the generosity of the community, monies in excess of $200,000 have been raised to support these programs.

The Wide Open Committee has decided to bring Chris Herren, a former guard for the Boston Celtics, to speak at Canton and Avon High Schools.  He will be presenting at both schools on Monday, October 22nd regarding his experiences with drugs and alcohol and the eventual loss of his basketball career.  His speech is intended to shed light on what can happen when someone chooses drugs or alcohol over school or career.  Herren is a sought-after motivational speaker, having appeared before audiences as diverse as students, fellow athletes, and prisoners.
