Community Mourns Loss of 'Cubby' Wilder

Collinsville resident was television repairman, civic leader and faithful congregation member.

The Canton community is mourning the loss of Clair “Cubby” Wilder, who died at the age of 91 on June 4. 

“He was just an all around nice guy,” said Julius Fialkiewicz, who remembers Wilder’s warm personality and home visits from his days as a television repairman. 

Prior to his days repairing televisions, Wilder had a radio repair business.

Wilder, a long-time Collinsville resident, also set up public address systems for various activities in town over the years, including the Memorial Day Parade, theater productions and the Canton Volunteer Fire Department Inc.’s annual carnival. 

Kathleen R. Woolam, curator at Canton Historical Museum, said Wilder was devoutly religious, attended Collinsville Congregational Church and wrote poetry.

His contributions to Canton included time as a museum guide and scout leader. 

“He was a wonderful person,” said Woolam, who graduated from Canton High School with Wilder in 1938.

Among, Wilder’s public honors was an induction into Canton High School’s Wall of Fame in 2003.
