The Canton High School football team held on to defeat visiting Enfield, 28-21, on Saturday afternoon. Canton had two goal line stands within the last 5 minutes to preserve the victory.

Early in the 2nd quarter, sophomore receiver Cam Daley replaced injured starting quarterback Eric Scott and led the Warriors on two touchdown drives. With 30 seconds remaining in the half, Daley completed a 39-yard TD strike to Terrence Brophy who made a juggling catch at the goal line. That catch gave Canton a 14-7 lead at the break.

Enfield battle back to tie the score on a 3-yard run by Michael Crowley midway in the 3rd, but Canton quickly answered. Sebastian Gumbs fielded the ensuing kick off at his own 19 yard line, cut to the near sideline behind some solid blocking, and outran several Enfield defenders for the score. The 81 yard TD return put Canton ahead for good.

Kyle Mullins continued his steady play carrying the ball 18 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns. His 20 yard TD run in the 4th quarter proved to be the winning points. Once again, Mullins and Daniel Delos (14-67) provided most of the Canton offense behind the solid play of the offensive line. Canton also protected the ball very well and had no turnovers in the game while Enfield turned it over three times. Linebacker Henry Bonini led the defense with an interception and fumble recovery, but the game remained in doubt until the final minutes. With the home crowd screaming encouragement, Terrence Brophy and Andrew Zukowski made huge defensive plays at the goal line to keep Enfield from tying the score. Canton improves to 3-2 and moves into a 3rd place tie with Enfield.

Canton's next home game is this Saturday, 10/20, at 1 p.m. against the coop of Coventry/Windham Tech/Bolton. Coventry is currently in 2nd place with a 3-1 record and features UCONN bound Tom Myers at tight end.
