Students Learn the Value of Community at Wall of Fame Induction

As he introduced the 10th class for Canton's Wall of Fame, Dr. Jordan Grossman said the honor isn't just for the recipients.

The program, which commends alumni who have made a positive impact in their communities, includes a plaque for each recipient as well as one that is permanently displayed near the school's entrance.

But just as importantly, the recipients set an example, Grossman said.

"This is something we can't teach in our classrooms," Grossman said.

Those honored include patent holders, therapists, engineers and more. Two are well known for their service in town, including Richard Hutchings, chief of the Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department and David Gilchrist, who has served in many capacities, most recently with the Board of Selectmen. The honorees are:

  • The John Bahre - Class of 1950
  • Dave Gilchrist - Class of 1950
  • Ted Moise - Class of 1983
  • Sally Giglio - Class of 1956
  • Dr. Fred Humphrey - Class of 1944
  • Richard Hutchings - Class of 1977
Introducing each were students from the school, chosen for their similar interests.

Honoring Bahre were two of his grandchildren, Allison Bahre and Jennifer Peterson. Bahre's well-known businessman in town included Smokey Bahre Cider Mill. The Wall of Fame program itself is supported by the John and Joni Bahre Scholarship Fund.

The recipients also had the chance to hear the school's jazz combo and Chamber Singers, see a nearly completed multi-use athletic facility, enjoy dinner and visit with old friends, students and school and town officials.

Moise, an engineer noted for his work at Texas Instruments, said the program, especially in its emphasis on hard work and giving back, sent a positive message.

"This program really demonstrates what Canton values," he said. "I'm really glad to be part of it."
