Short Film Shows the Fun Side of Creating Art

Evan Camporeale completes work for contest and keeps learning about filmmaking.

A production by a young filmmaker is making quite a splash in Collinsville.

Recently, Evan Camporeale gathered some of his friends to shoot a short film for a contest by the band Blue Scholars, which is seeking entries for its Cinemetropolis release.

For the project Camporeale filmed a group of friends creating artwork and having fun in the parking lot outside of Downright Music and Art.

Using self-taught techniques, Camporeale made a concept album cover come to life by editing various layers of the footage to create numerous effects, including art in motion and the mixture of color and black and white.

The film looks fun as Camporeale intended.

“The actual day of filming and painting was a blast,” he said. “I just wanted to see it as a fun event people wanted to be a part of.”

The editing was a little more tedious but for Camporeale it’s a good way to gain experience in filmmaking.

The 2011 Canton graduate is currently studying communication at Central Connecticut State University but hopes to study film at Emerson College.

“I thought it would be great to get myself out there a little more,” he said. He has already applied and submitted another film to the school but is working on his technique, which so far is 100 percent self-taught.

The idea for this project came with the help of fellow 2011 graduate Jon Melite. The two had tried to film a similar concept in December at the Nepaug Reservoir but discovered the Metropolitan District was not keen on the idea and didn’t finish.

This time, Camporeale said he made sure to get permission.

Another friend, Canton senior Zoe Miller coordinated the artwork and many others came out for the fun.

Camporeale said it would be great to win but either way is glad he did it.

“It would be fun to win but it’s more important to keep learning and get experience under my belt,” he said.
