Seventh Graders Get First-hand Look at Science During Discovery Day

Seventh-graders perform experiments, learn about science at 12 outdoor stations.

On Thursday May 26, the 7th grade students at Canton Middle School participated in the third-annual Discovery Day at and around Mills Pond. The Discovery Day is set up into 12 interactive learning stations. Professionals in the field, prominent members of the community and both middle and high school teachers, present the activities and/or information.

Some of the activities include using field microscopes to find life in the pond with Matt Lyman, Environmental Analyst CT Department of Environmental Protection.  Another station was a presentation of the history of Mills Pond by local historian Dr. Larry Carlton.

Hershal Zamechek, water quality specialist, helped students analyze the quality of water located in the south part of Mills Pond.  High school teachers came out and introduced invasive plants and "bugs" of the pond.  Middle school teachers introduced how to analyze soil, "grunt" for worms, and predator prey relationships and more.
