School Year Begins With 17 New Teachers

Many were hired to fill in for teachers on leave of absence.

Canton schools began the year with several new teachers to fill the spots of veteran teachers who retired, left the district or are taking a leave of absence.

At Cherry Brook Primary School, Laura Downey will be teaching first grade, replacing Kelly O’Dell who is taking a one-year leave of absence. Amber Mutch will be teaching third grade, covering for Mary Wallace is also taking a one-year leave. Long-time third grade teacher Jan Schley retired and Molly McGuire was hired to teach third grade. Over the summer, veteran third teacher Cathy Pepe resigned and Jessica Murack was hired to fill that position. Constance Hogan will be the speech/language pathologist at Cherry Brook School.

At Canton Intermediate School, Lori Racicot-Burrous has been hired to teach fourth grade, replacing Carrie Futterleib, who will be taking a leave later this fall. Rachel Caron is teaching sixth grade, replacing Tina Roy, who is taking a one-year leave of absence. Jennifer Peterson will also be teaching sixth grade.

At Canton Middle School, Anthony Benvenuto will be teaching Grade 7 math. Amy Parchen will be teaching social studies, replacing Christina Starr who is taking a leave of absence. Former Athletic Director and high school physical education teacher Nancy Grace will be returning to the middle school to teach science, replacing Paula Deaver who left the district.

Meanwhile, at Canton High School, Seth Korn has been hired as a school counselor. Steven Dreifach will teach special education for Grade 10, covering for Jessica Kennedy who is on leave for a year.  AnnaLise Febus-Barlow will teach Spanish. Dolores Gilbert will teach English. Cheryl Edwards will teach physical education and health, filling Nancy Grace’s position. The school district is in the process of selecting a biology teacher to fill in for Lauren Sheehan is out on leave. In addition, Sarah Cheney will teach English and John Lizzi was hired to teach social studies at the Canton Academy.
