Nutmeg Book Award Winning Author Rob Buyea Visits Canton Intermediate School

Active readers also treated to lunch with author.

Recently students at Canton Intermediate School had the chance to learn more about writing and fictional character from author Rob Buyea, the 2013 Nutmeg Book Award winner in the Intermediate category for his title Because of Mr. Terupt.

Thirty four students who took time to read all of the 2013 intermediate book nominees also got the chance to spend their lunch period with Buyea. He told them more about writing, his characters and enjoyed a viewing of the video created by four of the students — Calvin Bemis, Eli Sevigny, Matthew Moraski and Zoe Bates. In addition, Heather Baker, children's librarian at Canton Public Library, presented Buyea with a $250 award for the Nutmeg Book honor. Baker is part of the Nutmeg Book committee.

Kelly Conway, Library Media Specialist at CIS, said Buyea is the type of author that keeps kids engaged and reading. She also saw him speak at another location prior to the CIS visit and was impressed how he carried that over to a live situation.

"The way he connects with kids, I think, speaks volumes," she said.
