Nursery School Students Raise Money for Animals In Need

Collection and special visitors help teach children about giving back.

For the past couple weeks, preschoolers at Trinity Nursery School have been busy at home — helping in the kitchen, cleaning up the yard, assisting with laundry — whatever it takes to earn a some coins or a few dollars.

The students collect the money in a decorated container, bring it to the school and dump it into the large jar. Along the way, they learn about animals, and the reasons their hard-earned money is going to the Connecticut Humane Society to help care for pets who are awaiting adoption or are in need of medical care or shelter.

Each year the school picks a special project and in the past six has raised approximately $5,000 for good causes.

"These little hands can actually make a big difference," said teacher LeeAnn Delaney.

And on Wednesday morning, two special guests came to the school. Alicia Wright, public relations director at the society, brought her adopted dog Riley to thank the students, tell them a little more about animals that need homes and teach them some pet etiquette.

"They really do relate to animals," Delaney said. "It's a win, win."

Teacher Judy Sharp said it's also a great way to have children begin thinking of others.

"It's really nice to have them give," she said.
