“Tech Topics for Seniors: Demystifying Computers—How To Navigate the Ever-changing Landscape of Technology” at Canton Public Library

If you’re a senior who is determined not to be left behind by the technology advances of the last decade or so, you’re in luck.  Canton Public Library has  launched  a monthly series of workshops titled “Tech Topics for Seniors.”  The series, which began in September, continues with a special presentation by Abby Stokes, “Demystifying Computers—How To Navigate the Ever-changing Landscape of Technology” on Wednesday, April 18 at 1:00 PM.  The presentation is funded by a special technology grant from The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.  This session of the technology series is open to all ages, not just seniors.

At this seventh session in the series, Stokes will build upon the earlier presentations of Head of Technology Services Sarah McCusker.  Stokes’s “Demystifying Computers” is a reassuring, jargon-free talk to introduce late bloomers, grandparents, technophobes and the digitally challenged to all the wonders of using a computer, e-mail, and the Internet. In “How to Navigate the Ever-changing Landscape of Technology,”  Stokes talks about the widening digital divide as new innovations and gadgets are introduced on an almost daily basis. “What is out there and how it might benefit you can be lost in all the tech talk,” she believes.  Stokes helps "digital immigrants" (those baby boomers and beyond not born with a keyboard and mouse in hand) understand what everyone is talking about and how to decide what might work best for them.

Abby Stokes has demystified computers for over 140,000 people, mostly seniors, in the course of the past 17 years. Abby has taught courses in basic computing at both Cooper Union and New York University’s School of Lifelong Learning, as well as computer skills to private and corporate clients. She has lectured on the topic across the country. A firm believer that “if my mother can learn the computer, anyone can,” Stokes is confident that everyone can master the computer and navigate the Internet.

Stokes is the author of  Is This Thing On?,  A Computer Handbook for Late Bloomers, Technophobes, and the Kicking & Screaming.  Copies of the book are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and there will be copies of the book at the presentation for sale and signing.

Registration is requested for this free demonstration. Canton Public Library is at 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton.  For information:  (860) 693-5800 or www.cantonpubliclibrary.org
