(Update) Community Comes Out to Support Empty Bowls Fundraiser

Third, fourth graders and staff at Cherry Brook and CIS work together to raise $2,800 for the Canton Food Bank and Gifts of Love.

Students and staff from Cherry Brook and Canton Intermediate Schools hosted "Creations For Our Community: An Empty Bowls Event" Tuesday night.

The every-other year event combines art and community as the schools and local businesses team up to raise funds for the Canton Food Bank and Gifts of Love.

Third- and fourth-grade students, with the help of the art specialists at the schools, create bowls to display and/or raffle at the event and businesses donate soup, silverware and other items. Attendees then make a donation to eat dinner and the proceeds are given to Gifts of Love and the Canton Food Bank.

A total of $2,800 was raised and will be split between the two non-profits, said Deb Lang-Beaudoin, art specialist at Canton Intermediate School. That is $400 more than raised two years ago.

Numerous students and teachers volunteer for the event, taking money, giving out raffle tickets, setting tables, playing the piano and more.

Lang-Beaudoin, art specialist at Canton Intermediate School, said more than 90 gallons of soup was donated and approximately 320 RSVP'd for the event.

John Mason, who attended with his family, including fourth-grader Noah, said the event was impressive.

"This is really well organized," he said. "It's a nice community event."
