CIS Hosts Grade 6 Celebration

Evening includes speeches, gifts, music, video slide show and more.

Canton Intermediate School hosted its Grade 6 celebration Wednesday night. As the honored students prepare for Canton Middle School, several speakers lauded their academics and told them they were ready for the challenges that lay ahead.

Dana Kosior, mother and Board of Education member, said the students experienced numerous memorable moments such as the Civil War Re-enactment, the October snowstorm and the subsequently rescheduled Nature's Classroom.

Sixth graders have also excelled in sportsmanship, community service, music and academics and finished first in the state for reading and writing on the CMTs, she said.

"You have it all and the best part about it is this is just another beginning," Kosior said.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jordan Grossman, who until January was CIS principal, said it was the first class to have a rescheduled nature's classroom due to a snowstorm, the first to take Spanish, was number 1 in the CMT categories and responsible for spearheading $40,000 in Rock-A-Thon funds for Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

He said it was also the last time he could say had been the class' "proud" principal for at least part of the year.

Grossman also told the class he made a gift on their behalf to the Canton Education Foundation.

"I hope that this gift will inspire you to always help others," he said. "We expect great things from the Class of 2012."

Other gifts for the evening included T-shirt for the students, purchased by the Parent Teacher Organization. Students also presented PTO officers with a gift.

Students also heard from Superintendent Kevin Case.

"I know each of you is well prepared and will spread your wings and fly," Case said.

In addition, the ceremony featured musical performances and ended with the presentation of diplomas and a slide show with photos and video from the class' time at the school.
