CHS Club Takes Action For Local Family in Need

Members of Canton Adolescents Taking Action (CATA) are spearheading an effort to help out a local family this holiday season.

Working with the Canton Department of Senior and Social Services, members of the club, with some help from teacher Victoria Rich and her students, are raising funds for a local family in need.

The effort is part of Canton's "Holiday Giving Program," which is being coordinated by Donna Bristol-Goeben, social work Intern for the town of Canton Senior & Social Services Department. A handful of organizations, businesses, churches and families are participating this year and in all helping about 20 local families.

"The Holiday Giving Program is providing a great supplement to families who are already struggling and, in some cases, making the holiday possible," Bristol-Goeben said.

Last Friday, CATA and Rich's students made $220 at a bake sale and this week the club is holding PJ day, for which students can wear pajamas to school if they give at least $2 to help the family.

"It feels good to make a difference in the holiday season," said CATA co-president and senior Dana Nelson.

Leigh-Ana Rossitto, also a co-president, said other club activities include food drives, volunteering at the senior center and efforts for storm victims.

About 20 students are part of CATA under the guidance of advisor Gabrielle Laux Aitchison.

The town appreciates their help with the Holiday Giving Program.

"The energy and enthusiasm community organizations like CATA and other businesses, churches and families have put into helping their neighbors in need is incredible and is a further illustration of how generous the Canton community is," said Canton Senior and Social Services Director Claire Cote.
