Canton Valley Dental Visits Cherry Brook Primary School and Trinity Nursery School

Activity part of Children's Dental Health Month

Submitted release

In honor of Children’s Dental Health Month, which occurs every February, Canton Valley Dental visited Cherry Brook Primary School on Feb. 15 to educate the students on the importance of good oral health and homecare. The presentation addressed approximately 450 children from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes.

Matthew Keefe, DMD, and Melissa Porter (Registered Dental Hygienist) helped students “brush up” on their tooth care knowledge and homecare practices.  They emphasized the importance of proper nutrition and its role in good oral health, while showing the children proper home care techniques.

Each child received a “goodie bag” including an age appropriate toothbrush, floss and tooth paste. A letter was emailed home to the parents of the children to let them know what was presented and to ask them to discuss what was learned with their children to further promote better homecare practices.

On Feb. 17 Marie Valley, Registered Dental Hygienist and Lisa Babella, Certified Dental Assistant, of Canton Valley Dental, gave a short presentation at Trinity Nursery School to a small group of younger children. They read a story about a child’s visit to the dentist to familiarize the children with what happens in the dental chair. They demonstrated proper brushing techniques with the model teeth and let all the children give it a try.

The children were sent home with similar “goodie bags” but they also included a sticker system that the children can use to mark their calendar every time they brush their teeth. Parents can use this reward system to encourage a good homecare routine to set into place.

Canton Valley Dental’s goal is to assist the community in achieving a healthy, confident smile.

They believe that educating the children of our community is the best place to start. Encouraging the proper tooth care habits to form in children significantly increases the chance for a healthy mouth as an adult.
