Students from the Arts Council’s 34-town service area are eligible for participation and, this year, two students from Canton are currently enrolled in the program.

Neighborhood Studios runs from June 25 to August 3, 2012 with six public exhibitions to showcase student work. Travelers is the lead sponsor of this year’s program, with support from contributing sponsor Northeast Utilities Foundation and studio sponsors the Howard A. Now in its 14th year, Neighborhood Studios is a nationally recognized arts education apprenticeship program that provides students with an immersive, hands-on learning experience in the arts while paying a weekly stipend. Students engage in all-day arts workshops with master teaching artists for the six-week apprenticeship period and meet regularly at the Hartford Public Library for career skills instruction in performing online job searches, practicing in-person interviews and managing personal finances. At the conclusion of the program, apprentices present their work in a public exhibition.

“In today’s competitive times, the Neighborhood Studios program helps students develop the skills they’ll need to succeed in the workplace not only in the arts, but any position,” says Cathy Malloy, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Hartford Arts Council. “Neighborhood Studios unifies the Arts Council’s commitment to providing quality education opportunities to residents of Greater Hartford with its resolve to show the importance of the arts in the today’s business world and economy.”

Each participating studio offers training in a different artistic discipline and an annual “theme” or “focus” for students to explore. The six studio programs for 2012 are:

  • SNAP! Photography at the Amistad Center for Art & Culture
  • Youth Jazz Orchestra and Performing Dance Ensemble at Artists Collective
  • Triple Threat Teens: Advanced Theatre Studio at Hartford Children’s Theatre
  • Breakdancing Shakespeare at Hartford Stage
  • Eye on Video Digital Film Production at Real Art Ways.
