Canton Intermediate School Hosts Grade 6 Celebration

Students Remember Highlights as They Move to Middle School.

As 134 sixth-graders get ready for the next level of education, Canton Intermediate School celebrated their successes in and out of the classroom, those who guided them along the way and even a new mascot Wednesday night.

The school hosted a Grade 6 celebration Wednesday that included musical performances, speeches and the presentation of certificates and a school T-shirt.

“Welcome to another exciting journey of your child’s educational career,” principal Dr. Jordan Grossman told friends and family gathered in the school’s gym.

“These experiences will provide a solid foundation for you to draw upon in the future,” PTO president Elisabeth Haynes said.

Board of Education Chairwoman Beth Kandrysawtz urged the students to be ready for change.

“Learn to welcome change and be open to new experiences,” she said.

Grossman and Student Activities Council officers Aubrey Sanford and Lauren Abbott also presented the school with a new start mascot. Next year’s officers will hold a contest to name the mascot.

Grossman also took time to honor several teachers and parents and announce a donation to Kiliminjaro Education Foundation on the students’ behalf. The sixth-graders had already been part of raising $12,000 for a Tanzanian School and more than $40,000 for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Grossman said. He urged students to continue giving back.

“We expect the Class of 2011 to make a difference in the world,” he said.
