Town of Canton to Launch Facebook Page

Page would be town's latest social media effort.

The town of Canton is nearly ready to launch a facebook page.

Chief Administrative Officer Robert Skinner told selectmen Wednesday that the town has been working on the page and should be able to launch it soon.

The site would be useful to pass along town information, especially during emergencies and special events, and will often mirror the town's twitter feed, Skinner said.

"It’s just another opportunity to communicate with public," he said.

The town has drafted terms of use and three people will help monitor the page to make sure comments follow the policies, Skinner said. All comments will be archived for Freedom of Information purposes, he added.

"It needs to be monitored so it doesn’t become an abused location," First Selectman Richard Barlow said.

The page will be the town's second social media venture. It launched a twitter account — https://twitter.com/CantonCTInfo — in October.

The town also provides e-mail notifications and in certain cases uses the state's emergency alert system

Selectmen Steve Roberto said the facebook page will be another good way to provide information and receive feedback.

"I think it’s good for the community to participate," Roberto said.

Skinner said the site will be launched once the town attorney double check a few legal guidelines.
