[Update] Town Awarded Funds for Storm Clean-Up

Money needs selectmen's approval.

After approval by the Board of Selectmen Wednesday night, the town will receive a $27,997.92 check from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for costs incurred during a Jan. 12 snowstorm, which took about two days to clean up.

In early March, at the request of Gov. Dannel Malloy, President Barack Obama declared the Jan. 11 to Jan. 12 storm a major disaster in most Connecticut counties.

According to paperwork from Chief Administrative Officer Robert Skinner, Canton began working on the storm shortly after midnight on Jan. 12 and finished 48 hours later

When counting overtime, snow route, salaries, fuel, sand and salt and some maintenance costs, the town spent nearly $38,000 on the storm, town paperwork shows.

With excess costs from the harsh winter, it’s good that the town qualifies for the FEMA funds, Skinner said,

“Every little bit helps,” he said.

Even with the funds, the town is still showing deficits in its salt and overtime accounts for winter storm clean-up.

Overtime was budgeted at $48,912, which ran over by $23,771. Salt was budgeted at $118,000. Costs in that area ran over $73,017.

For the 2011-2012 year, the town budgeted about the same overtime but due to the fact that salt has run over the last several years, selectmen allotted $150,000 in that account.
