Selectmen to Discuss Marketing Strategies, Paramedic Service and Obtaining Hydro-electric Proposals

Night begins with a special town meeting to increase hours for CAO clerk.

Canton selectmen are due to discuss several issues Wednesday night, including a proposal to increase business marketing efforts, a possible study about paramedic service and the idea of obtaining proposal from developers interested in working with the town on the hydroelectric project.

For marketing, the town's Economic Development Agency is suggesting the town set aside some $31,000 in next year's budget for several initiatives, many which would be new. The biggest item would be $15,000 for an external branding campaign to reach out to industries and businesses that have a high potential to locate in town. It would include various forms of marketing and design developed by the EDA.

Selectmen will also further discuss the idea of getting proposal from developers interested in partnering with the town on the hydroelectric project in hopes of restoring power production to the upper and/or lower dams on the Farmington River in Collinsville. The town is also still attempting to secure permanent licenses to operate the dams and is seeking congressional help.

Selectmen will also discuss the idea of a feasibility study about upgrading the town's ambulance service from AEMT to Paramedic level.

AEMT's provide numerous life-saving measures and techniques such as CPR, automated defibrillation, artificial ventilations, dual lumen airway placement, oxygen, spinal immobilization, oral glucose administration and much more

Paramedics provide a higher level of support with techniques such as advanced airway management, endotracheal intubation, manual defibrillations, IV fluid therapy and EKG monitoring and narcotic pain management.

Paramedic service is the highest level of pre-hospital care. Currently UConn paramedics intercept Canton ambulances when needed. The issue has long been discussed and officials feel the state may eventually require a paramedic level of service.

Selectmen will meet after the special town meeting at 7 p.m. in the Canton Community Center. That will deal with the following:

1. Shall the Town of Canton increase the hours for the Chief Administrative Officer’s Clerk from 15 hours per week to 25 hours per week.
