Scoreboard, Additional Screening Added to Canton High School Track and Field Project

The Permanent Municipal Building Committee voted Thursday to add a scoreboard and additional screening for nearby neighbors to the Track and Field facility project at Canton High School.

Chief Administrative Officer Robert Skinner said the committee voted Thursday night to use surplus funding to add the items to the project.

Already, the town had planned to have the contractor install the base footings for a scoreboard (about $13,115). Now the approximate $26,000 scoreboard itself will be added, he said.

In addition, a 400-foot chain-link fence at a cost of approximately $9,000 and some $3,600 in additional plantings will provide additional screening between neighboring homes and the facility, Skinner said. The fence will also help spectators distinguish the borders between town and private property, Skinner added.

The town is still working on surplus numbers and anticipates there may still be enough to at least partially fund bleachers, officials said.

Project administrator Jeff Shea said a "punch list" of minor items will be drawn up and he anticipates it will be Spring before the project is 100 percent complete.

On Friday, however, Skinner said the town does hope it can take ownership of the project next week.

Next Tuesday the town is scheduled to do a walk-through of the property with the contractor. After the walk-through, educators will discuss whether or not the last home football game, can be played on the new facility, Board of Education chairwoman Leslee Hill said. If so, it would take place on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Last fall, voters approved a $3.615 Million project that includes the track and multi-use field facility as well as a new parking lot.
