Sarah McCusker, head of Technology at Canton Public Library, has been offering one-on-one or small group tutorials since mid-January to help library patrons transition into the use of electronic reading devices. She will help with the downloading of books, including the use of the library’s Overdrive system for downloading library books. Whether you have a Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Reader, or other e-reader device, she’ll walk you through the process.

Sarah has added the following dates for e-reader help.  She will be available in the library’s program room on the following days and times:

Drop-in Knitting at Canton Public Library

Join other knitters in the month of March at Canton Public Library’s Drop-in Knitting sessions.  The Monday night group, which meets on the third Monday, will meet on March 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Join fellow knitters for a leisurely hour or two and share some peaceful camaraderie. Crocheters and spinners are also welcome. Participants should bring a project to work on. The Drop-in Knitting sessions are for both beginners and advanced knitters, and although no doubt knitters will share tips with one another, there will be no instruction provided.

“Tech Topics for Seniors: Getting the Most from Your Library Website”

If you’re a senior who is determined not to be left behind by the technology advances of the last decade or so, you’re in luck. Canton Public Library has  launched  a monthly series of workshops titled “Tech Topics for Seniors.”  The series, which began in September, continues with “Tech Topics for Seniors: Getting the Most from Your Library Website” on Wednesday, March 21 at 1 p.m.

At this sixth session of “Tech Topics for Seniors,” Canton Public Library’s Head of Tech Services, Sarah McCusker, will demonstrate some of the wonderful features that are available to anyone with a Canton Public Library card.  The library’s website enables a patron to find out whether we own a book, or, if we don’t, whether a nearby library does.

With their library card number and PIN, patrons can place a hold on books owned by Canton or by other libraries in our consortium.  Patrons can also renew books. Sarah will also highlight the wealth of electronic resources available to Canton Library patrons, including ancestry.com (for use in the library), Overdrive downloadable media, A to Z World Travel, and Mango Languages, to name just a few. And for those with a home internet connection, all of these features are available 24/7 rather than just during library hours.

Following a lecture/demonstration, seniors will have a chance to try their hand at using the resources available through the library website using the new mobile computer lab. The lab was purchased and set up using a technology grant from The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

Registation is required and space is limited for this free demonstration.

“PJ Story Time:  Sing in the Spring” at Canton Public Library

Canton Public Library’s second PJ Story Time for March is “Sing in the Spring,” so don your favorite cozy PJ’s and join us for a story time that welcomes daffodils, warmer weather, and the rebirth of all things green. The story time will be held on Thursday,  March 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and will be led by Ms. Heather.

Among the stories to be enjoyed are two which celebrate famous songs and their creators.  Blowin’ in the Wind features one of the 600 songs—and perhaps the most famous—by Bob Dylan, with illustrations by Caldecott Honor medalist Jon J. Muth.   Sunshine on My Shoulders features John Denver’s famous song about friendship, sunshine, and joy, with illustrations by Christopher Canyon.

PJ Story Time runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Youngsters will enjoy stories, songs, a snack, a craft, and a short movie. PJ Story Times, which are for children 3 and up,  are free, but Registration is required.

“Movie on the Big Screen: Hop ” at Canton Public Library

In March, Canton Public Library showcases the new film Hop as part of its “Movie on the Big Screen” series. On Sunday, March 25, the show starts at 2 p.m. Hop is rated PG and is recommended for ages 6 and up.

Everybody knows that Easter candy is made on Easter Island in a special candy factory that employs bunnies and chicks.  Hop takes us to the world of bunnies, where The Easter Bunny’s son, E.B., is reluctant to follow in his father’s footsteps—or should it be pawsteps?—and dreams rather of being a drummer.  In the world of humans, Fred O’Hare (clearly a bunny pun), is a slacker who, like E.B., is a disappointment to his father. E.B. and Fred meet and become roommates in a borrowed mansion (only in Hollywood).  Fred is helped by his bunny buddy to find his path in life. Hop features animation and live action, and entertains with humor, silliness, and slapstick.

For an enjoyable and family-oriented afternoon, Hop is sure to please. The movie is free, with no registration necessary, and is intended for ages  6 and up.  And of course there will be free hot popcorn.
