Mills Pond Pool in Canton Slated to Open June 15

The town of Canton plans to open Mills Pond Pool on June 15, Parks and Recreation Director Brian Wilson said.

So far preliminary work is ahead of schedule for the traditional Father's Day weekend opening, he said.

Residents can swim free from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday opening weekend. Resident family season passes are $110.

In addition, two pool related projects are in the works. TLB architecture is designing a final plan for the approved improvements at the pool. Last December residents approved a plan to take $400,000 in town "reserves" to fund improvements. At a cost of $40,000 for the firm, that leaves $360,000 for the work. The main portions of the project will be new decking and an improved and safer above-ground filtration system in a separate structure, Wilson said.

Pending land-use approvals, the goal is to start that work in September when the pool closes for the season, he added.

Also in the works is a study by Mythic Sports Group on the feasibility of a covered, year-round pool operation.

The report would look at the costs and potential revenue, pros and cons from operating year-round. Town officials would then have to discuss the ideas before potentially moving forward. Proponents say a year-round operation could offer much more programming and bring in revenue to make it self sustaining and perhaps even profitable. Others were skeptical at the idea and spending the funds on the study at this time.

In February Canton residents voted 106 to 38 to spend up to $12,500 to have a consultant further investigate the idea. Mythic was hired for $10,500.

Wilson expects a draft report at the end of June.
