Dispatches from the Town Meeting on Garage, Roads Projects

Editor's Note: Thanks for reading these notes. They were meant to be just that and it was a fun experiment. However, we apologize for the lack of updates after 7:22 p.m. I was no longer able to access the site from the school for some reason. Patch is working on a separate story.

7:22
Alberti:
Center of site 22 feet lower than Commerce That really provides a great screening mechanism, Alberti says, evergreen buffer also.
Water, sewer, natural gas available, storm water infrastructure in place, in industrial zone, ample
"This site is significant distance to the nearest residential development"
former proposal for 28,000 square foot industrial complex on site.

7:19 Site selection
Alberti: Current site in 100 year flood plain, many parts, such as salt shed, would not be allowed if rebuilt.
More than 80 sites considered between 2007 and 2013
Many eliminated for costs, zoning restrictions, shape, etc.

7:17 Alberti: Interviewed DPW in 2007, determined needs. every town is different. Identified need of 25,518 square feet. Modified that to just under 20,000 square feet today. How does that compare? Ideal space is 23,344 and minimum of 19,843 when industry standards are considered.

7:16 p.m. — Alberti. The facility is outdated, inefficient. Plow doesn't even fit. Left outdoors, trucks do not last as long as they should, he said. Structures have exceeded useful life.

7:13 pm - Consulting engineer Jeff Alberti up now. 2008-2009 town evaluated 68 sites. Saw need for zoning district.

7:11 pm - First selectman starting with on garage project.

7:08 pm meeting is underway.

6:49 and surprisingly few cars in high school lot so far.

EDA chairman and first selectman parked next to each other.

As long as our connection works Canton Patch will do its best to provide some real-time coverage of tonight's town meeting on the garage and roads projects slated for referendum on May 22.
