Canton Senior Center to Host Earth Day Event

Submitted release

Earth day is the birthday for the modern environmental movement of the 1970s. The founder, Gaylord Nelson, was a senator of Wisconsin who was inspired for change after witnessing the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA.

He took the inspiration from the current student anti war movement and infused it with education for the public regarding air and water pollution. If offices throughout the country increased the rate of two-sided photocopying from the 1991 figure of 20 percent to 60 percent, they could save the equivalent of about 15 million trees. Recycling and conserving energy is a great way to help the environment, and Earth Day is just around the corner!

In honor of Earth Day, Canton Senior and Social Services will be hosting an event on Wednesday April 24, 2013. The event is open to adults age 55 and up with no restriction of residency. The event will start at 12:45 p.m. after CRT lunch, and will start with Canton’s first selectman, Richard Barlow, to speak about the Town of Canton’s transfer station, and the hydro project.

Other guests include Josh and Joanie of Ross Solar Group, to talk about Solarize Canton, and a representative from the Canton Farmers Market. We will also be showing a premiere of the original Lorax movie by Dr. Seuss, and raffle off small gifts donated by End Hunger CT and Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority (CRRA). Snacks will be provided by Brookdale Senior Living, and attendees should wear green in honor of the event.
