Following is a list of the top 10 taxpayers and their assessed value on the Oct. 1, 2012 Grand List. 

1. W/S Peak Canton Properties LLC (The Shoppes at Farmington Valley) — $33.5 million 

2. Connecticut Light and Power — $15.9 million 

3. Wakefern Food Corp. (ShopRite of Canton) — $6.1 million 

4. Kohl's — $6.1 million 

5. New Horizons Inc. (Cherry Brook Health Care) — $5.1 million 

6. Boulder Ridge Association, LTD (Apartments) — $4.6 million 

7. Connecticut Water Company — $4 million 

8. Henry Bahre, et. al (Canton Village) — $2.9 million 

9. Collinsville Savings Bank — $2.8 million 

10. Maple Glen Associates (apartments) — $2.3 million

I could only imagine how much worse off this town would be financially if the Shoppes at not gone in - 3 of the town's 4 biggest tax payers are located there. Let's hope for continued responsible development on Route 44, Lawton Road and in Collinsville. More commecial development = lower taxes and more services (i.e. bike paths, open space, recreation, better schools, better roads).
