Canton Residents Show Interest in Solar Program

Townspeople have expressed a good amount of interest in a residential solar program designed to offer the technology at a significant discount, town officials said.

The town was recently selected to participate in Solarize Connecticut, a State-sponsored program through the Connecticut Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority that combines town-sponsored education and outreach efforts with tiered pricing that improves with increased participation.

More than 75 homeowners in town have expressed interest, said Jeff Shea, project administrator for the town.

"There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm for this program," Shea said

In addition to those interested in the potentially installing solar panels on their homes, many have signed on to be "solar champions" and help spread the word about the program, Shea added.

The town has held several workshops and was able to participate in a recent clean energy tour.

Representatives from Ross Solar Group, the designated and competitively selected solar installer for the project, will speak in town Wednesday as part of an Earth Day celebration. In addition, a third Solarize Canton workshop is set for 11 a.m. on April 27 at the Community Center.

Shea said residents who can't make the workshop can also contact Ross Solar to have a free in-home estimate.
