150 People Needed to Validate Budget Monday Night

Annual Town Budget Meeting Set for 7 p.m. at Canton Middle/High School Auditorium

The town will hold its annual budget meeting Monday, May 14 and by charter at least 150 voters need to be present or the plan goes to a referendum at an approximate cost of $3,500, officials said. 

In all the proposed 2012-2013 spending plan is $34,739,474, a 2.12 percent increase over the 2011-12 approved budget of $34,015,978.

Under the plan taxes will go up by 0.14 mills and the owner of an "average" home valued at $361,429 and assessed at $253,000 would play an additional $35 in taxes.

The Board of Education budget is proposed at $23,440,402, a 3.6 percent increase over the 2011-12 approved budget of $22,618,066.

The Board of Selectmen spending plan is $9,437,222, a 2.3-percent increase over the 2011-2012 approved budget of $9,221,562.

The balance of the budget is for the Board of Finance, including debt service, at $1,861,850.

"I certainly hope residents will come out and support the budget at the annual town budget meeting on the 14th," First Selectman Richard Barlow said. "I believe the Board of Selectmen's budget is a prudent expenditure of town funds and will allow us to provide the necessary services." 

The meeting will take place Monday, May 14, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Canton Middle/High School Auditorium, 76 Simonds Ave.
