Friday Weather Related Problems in Valley Included Fires, Road Closure and Lightning Strikes

Police chief offers update on impacted roads.

Weather related problems were numerous across the Valley Friday afternoon, including a house fire on Birch Knoll in Canton, and a lightning strike to the tower on top of Canton Town Hall. 

Greg Wasoka, owner of America the Beautiful Country store in Collinsville said he heard a loud sizzle and felt the shock when the lightning struck. 

"It was just like a shock of energy running through everything," he said. 

Friday evening, Canton Police Chief Christopher Arciero reported the following:  
  •  Dyer is not affected by the tree hit by lightning on Birch Knoll (related story coming on fire) but two nearby houses could be affected. The homeowner has contacted a contractor and residents had been warned.
  •  Access from East Hill onto Olsen Road is blocked.
  • Old Canton Road is blocked with water over the road.
  • The 100 block of Indian Hill Road is partially blocked with large pot holes.
  • Breezy Hill Road north of Frey is not passable.

In Simsbury, problems were also numerous, including the closure of a portion of Bushy Hill for downed poles and wires.
