Volunteer Firefighters Extinguish Blaze at Gracey Road Garage

Volunteer firefighters responded to the scene of a detached garage fire at 121 Gracey Road at 11:43 a.m. Saturday morning.

Within minutes, crews on Canton’s Engine 3, 4, 6 and Ladder 2 were on the scene, knocking down fire from the rear and attic space of a detached garage, according to a department press release.

"Their quick fire attack prevented further damage to the structure and any extension into the residence, about 30 feet away," the release states

Mutual aid companies from Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company and New Hartford Fire Rescue also responded. Avon Volunteer Fire Department provided coverage for the town, while Canton’s volunteer firefighters were on the scene.

Due to the lack of hydrants, firefighters set up a portable pond system, with tankers, including Canton's Tanker 7, bringing in water to fight the blaze. Crews deemed the fire under control shortly after noon.

Fire crews conducted extensive "overhaul," saving most of the property in the garage and safely removed a number of propane tanks from the garage’s attic space.

Aided by a thermal imaging camera, volunteer firefighters checked for fire "extension," or possible areas where the fire could have potentially spread.

There were no injuries were reported and firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 1 p.m.

Fire police from the town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department closed off portions of the road during the emergency.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
