The town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department provided mutual aid to New Hartford Thursday night for a fire in an abandoned home in a wooded area in that town but near the Canton town line.
Early Thursday evening, Canton firefighters and fire police were on Powder Mill Road setting up water supply areas. Tankers from New Hartford and elsewhere used the areas to get water and bring it to the scene.
Later, around 6:15 p.m., the Canton department sent a small crew and its All Terrain Vehicle to the scene due to an ensuing brush fire. Earlier, however, there was an abandoned structure involved, fire officials said.
Fire officials said Canton Engines 1, 3, 4, and Tanker 7 were initially involved. Later Utility 8 helped with getting the ATV near the scene.
Some Canton firefighters spent more than six hours assisting with the fire.
Fire police and Canton police officers also spent hours blocking off Route 202 Thursday after an afternoon accident in New Hartford resulted in numerous downed wires.
