Earlier Thursday evening - around 5 p.m. - firefighters from the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department, and other emergency officials, including police, scrambled to keep up with reports of wires across roadways, downed trees and other hazards.

About 20 firefighters responded to such calls throughout town.

Those included wires across the roadway or similar problems near 100 Dunne Avenue, Bristol Drive and Route 44 and several other areas.

A tree also struck wires on a pole at the community center, which was reportedly running on generator power.

Employees from the town’s Public Works Department came in to help with the incidents and helped firefighters remove tree limbs, block off roads and secure areas until Connecticut Light and Power could respond.

At 7:30 p.m., more than 130,00 customers were without power in Connecticut, including an estimated 94 in Canton.

At 10 p.m., about 101,000 CL&P customers were without power but the Canton number had gone up a little to 101.
