Small Transformer Issue, Grass Fire On Dyer Avenue

A power line issue on Dyer Avenue near Birch Knoll Monday afternoon caused a small grass fire and some power outages in the area. Area residents reported hearing a loud bang.

The small grass fire was extinguished by Lowell Humphrey, a member of the fire police unit of the town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department, who used a garden hose supplied by a homeowner.

There was some initial police radio reports of balloons on the line.

Connecticut Light and Power spokesman Mitch Gross said the issue was in fact balloons. The loud "bang" was the fuse doing its job, cutting the power to prevent the possibility of further damage to the electrical delivery system, Gross added.

Gross said a lineworkers removed them from the line and reset the fuse, which is located next to the transformer, which works like a home circuit breaker.

CL&P was notified at 1:39 p.m. of the issue and the few customers who lost power had it back by 2:30 p.m., Gross said.
