Several Unlocked Cars Broken into Near Canton

Are you locking your vehicles and house doors, Canton residents?

After a string of car break-ins nextdoor in Avon and Simsbury, police remind area residents that you should be doing so as a precaution.

Four unlocked cars in Avon were broken into overnight at the beginning of July and reported to police on July 2, Lt. Kelly Walsh, spokesperson for the Avon Police Department, said Tuesday.

"Keep your cars and homes locked," Walsh said. "Keep personal and valuable belongings out of site in your vehicles."

About $3,365-worth of golf equipment – including golf clubs, balls and a bag – were stolen from a Volvo station wagon parked outside and left unlocked on Wellington Heights in Avon, Walsh said.

Sunglasses, a case and change – about $70-worth combined – were taken from an unlocked jeep on Wheeler Road in Avon, she said.

Two more unlocked cars in Avon on Moravia Road were also broken into. A wallet, gas card, driver's license and credit cards was stolen out of one of the cars and nothing was taken from the other, Walsh said.

There was another car break-in incident reported on June 28 that happened in the Healthtrax parking lot, which is on Simsbury Road in Avon. A gym member, who was working out from about 9:55 a.m. to 11:20 a.m., returned to her car and discovered that money, her purse, a small change purse and her driver's license were missing. She told police that she thought she had locked her car.

There was no broken glass around any of the cars.

Police have not determined if any of the car break-ins are connected, as the cases remain under investigation, but the Simsbury Police Department is also investigating a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles on side streets along Climax Road, which runs through Avon and Simsbury.

Lt. Fred Sifodaskalakis, spokesman for the Simsbury police, said 10 thefts occurred on July 1-2 on the Simsbury side of Wheeler Road, as well as David Drive, Evans Drive and Eastview Drive.

"The case has been transferred to one of our detectives," Sifodaskalakis said. "Unfortunately we have no suspects at this time."

Simsbury and Avon police again urge residents to make sure they lock their vehicles and the doors to their homes.

"These people went to the locked doors, saw that they were locked, and just moved on to the ones that were unlocked," Sifodaskalakis said.
