Storm Closes Portion of Route 44 For Several Hours

Route 44 between Lovely Street and Secret Lake Road has reopened for now but west-bound traffic could be further impacted while Connecticut Light and Power continues to work on downed wires and a blown transformer, police said. 

The portion of roadway was closed from early evening to approximately 7:30 p.m. after a transformer fire broke out during a violent rain storm. 

Shortly before 8 p.m. power was restored to traffic lights in the area. 

At 7:30 p.m., Connecticut Light and Power estimated that 997, or 20 percent, of its Canton customers were without power. Shortly after 8 p.m. that estimate was down to 179 customers.
