Fire Marshal Adam B. Libros said a mother and her daughter were home at the time and got out safely. There were working smoke detectors in the house, he added.

Fire officials said a family dog also got out safely.

There was fire damage in the first-floor living room and significant smoke damage throughout the house, Libros said. He confirmed that it is uninhabitable now but said the long-term decision will be up to the family’s insurance company.

No cause of fire has been determined yet.

“It’s still under investigation,” Libros said.

The Town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department battled the fire with help from units and trucks from Avon, Burlington, Farmington and Simsbury.
