Canton Woman Asks Police to Renew Investigation Into Daughter's Murder
Christine Tortoro was found strangled 25 years ago in Hartford. Police believed she her death may have been at the hands of a serial killer.
A Canton woman has asked police to renew the investigation of her daughter’s death, which took place 25 years ago in Hartford.
The woman, Carole Tortoro, reached out to Hartford Police July 24, according to a Hartford Courant article. Her daughter Christine was 21 when she was found naked and strangled to death in the Connecticut River on Aug. 26, 1988.
An investigation at the time turned up a witness who reportedly saw Christine walking on Franklin Avenue with a man not long before her body was found, the article says. Police also searched for a pickup truck seen in Riverside Park on the same day.

No arrests were ever made in the case. Tortoro said she struggled with depression and personal issues until now and felt that it was the right time to renew the investigation.
Police said they may ask the public for help solving the crime, according to the report.

According to a 1994 article, Christine Tortoro’s death was one of 19 unsolved murders in the state between 1985 and 1994. A homicide task force was formed to investigate the deaths and police reportedly considered the possibility that they were linked to a serial killer.
