Officials are seeking the party for responsible for abandoning a dog in Canton Saturday night and are hoping someone will step forward to adopt the animal in just a few days.

The dog was abandoned on the Farmington River Trail near the treatment plant officials said.

He is an older neutered male and very friendly, animal control officer Beverly LaPlume said. The dog is 70 to 80 pounds and likely a boxer, pit mix, she said.

"He's like a big couch potato," she said.

Abandoning a dog is animal cruelty and the owner would face charges, LaPlume said. Anyone with information is asked to call (860) 693-0221.

This dog will be available for adoption on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. If anyone is interested in meeting him they can call Animal Control at (860) 409-4205 and leave a message to schedule an appointment.
