Canton Firefighters Extinguish Mulch Fire

Town of Canton volunteer firefighters, with assistance from other crews, extinguished a mulch fire Sunday afternoon.

The town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department responded to Canton Village Construction property on Ramp Road at 12:10 p.m. after a passerby reported a mulch fire, said Capt. Wayne Goeben.

The smoke could be seen from Route 44.

The fire department used its Ladder 2 and Engine 3 to fight the fire, with Engine 1 and Tanker 7 on standby. It took about 55,000 gallons to fight and firefighters were able to to run about 800 feet of hose from a hydrant at nearby Pelch’s Automotive, he added.

Fire police performed local traffic control.

Due to the size of the pile, water couldn't penetrate deep enough to extinguish the blaze so Canton Village Construction assisted with a front-end loader to tear it down, Goeben said.

The Metropolitan District Commission and Connecticut Light and Power were also called to the scene due to water usage and high-tension lines in the area, fire officials said.

Officials were on the scene until 3:30 p.m. In all, approximately 20 members of the Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department responded.
