Reader Expresses Concern About Planned Turf Field

By Judi Friedman

To the Editor:

As a former Canton school teacher and Canton school parent I am extremely concerned about the installation of artificial turf on the Canton school fields. I have been apprised of the work of Dr. Philip Landrigan, Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He states that the proven hazards to children’s health are heat, turf burns or abrasions, and turf toe. In addition if any recycled tire materials are used in the turf they contain a mix of chemicals. Tire crumbs contain a multitude of carcinogenic and poisonous additives. Injuries resulting from normal playing may develop antibiotic resistant staph infections. The Hospital for Special Surgery’s study shows that there are more knee injuries on artificial turf that on natural grass.

Natural grass is becoming the preferred surface for an increasing number of professional and college sports teams. Since 1991, 18 new major league baseball stadiums have been built, all with natural grass. The older stadiums have removed the synthetic turf. All seven future ballparks currently in development will have natural grass. Even  strong and fit professional athletes have complained about the use of artificial turf for the above reasons and in addition are concerned because they have swallowed and inhaled residue that results from the use of the turf fields.

Because children are extremely vulnerable to the effects of playing on artificial turf, I strongly urge Canton to reconsider the use of this substance.

It makes me chuckle when someone spends weeks mudslinging, finger pointing, and pot shotting untilRead More the targets of their harassments speak up and then they decide the game is over, well sorry, I have only just begun. I was sickened by the behavior of certain people at the town meeting scheduled to discuss this garage project. Most of them where given a script to read using lies and incorrect numbers to attack members of town boards and commission. They attacked the intelligence, ethics, and integrity of members of the Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, Permanent Municipal Building Committee and project consultants. You have even managed to involve our neighbors from Barkhamsted in your May 15 Patch submission, referring to them as “Hairshirt wearing radicals who don’t wash their cars”, again full of incorrect numbers and misinformation. I am attending a Board of Ethics Meeting tonight to defend myself from mud slung on me by those finger pointers trying to distract from the facts at hand. These very same people told this town that they wanted a football field and they wanted a pool. They said that the folks in Canton deserved these things. They understood that these things came with a price tag and they were ready to pay it. Funny how the song has changed now that we have changed our focus to a much less glamorous project. Perhaps if we were proposing a hockey rink or an equestrian team $5.4 million wouldn’t be so much.

Well said! The spending proposed for this garage is outrageous!
