Humphrey: Factual Information About Bonding Question

By Lowell F. Humphrey

I am writing to provide factual information in my capacity as a private citizen. My purpose is not to advocate for, or against, any proposed project via this letter.

Many residents feel that the Board of Selectmen’s decision to combine the road repair and town garage funding as one referendum question eliminates their ability to cast a meaningful and independent vote on each project.

Voters are asking what the long-term ramifications of their voting no on this question would be and I would point them to information that is part of the public record.

The Town of Canton plans to sell bonds in August of 2013 for any capital project(s) approved this Election Day.

The Chief Administrative Officer and the Town’s bond counsel both confirm that if the combined road repairs/town garage funding question fails in November ample time exists to bring one, or both projects, to another referendum for inclusion, if successful, in the August 2013 bond sale.

Thank you Mr. Humphrey.

One way to cut spending and increase the town's ability to bond money is to cut pensions for current and future public employee retirees.
